Sig Sauer is a company headquartered in Exeter, New Hampshire, that manufactures a line of firearms. The company makes guns for law enforcement, military and commercial users. Every Sig Sauer gun has a serial number engraved on it. With this serial number, you can call Sig Sauer customer service and request the date of manufacture of the gun. The SIG Sauer P238 is a compact .380 ACP caliber, single-actionpistol announced by SIG Sauer at the 2009 SHOT Show. It is modelled after the M1911, similar to the Colt Mustang.[1][2] Grip panels are fluted polymer making this an all-metal frame firearm in competition with plastic-framed pistols in the same class like the Ruger LCP and the Kel-Tec P-3AT.[3]
The P238 has an aluminum frame and a stainless steel slide (with the exception of the HD model which is all steel).[4] Initially, P238 pistols had standard sights with night sights as a more expensive option. However, all models currently produced have night sights standard. Starting in 2012, many variants have an ambidextrous thumb safety standard or as an option.

Sig Sauer P238 Serial Number
When introduced in 2009, the P238 was available in a matte black finish and a two-tone finish with a matte silver colored slide and black frame. Since then, SIG Sauer has produced a number of variants including some short run commemorative editions. Among the variants are versions with various finishes, with a stainless steel frame and different grips and embellishments.

In July 2009, SIG Sauer issued a recall of all P238s sold within a certain serial number range, which they referred to as a 'Mandatory Safety Upgrade'. The reason stated for the recall is that a small number of P238s were built with defective manual safety levers, leading to 'the remote possibility that the gun could fire unintentionally, thus creating a risk of injury or death', although SIG Sauer emphasized that no such injuries had actually occurred.[5] According to SIG Sauer, the recall did not affect any pistols with a serial number that started with '27Axxxxx'.[5]

You'll probably see a 'P' stamped on the barrel lug on your P229, which means it was proofed in the US at the Exeter, NH facility. U.S. proof stamps do not carry a date code, evidently because the proofing was done internally at Sigarms rather than by a testing agency as it is in Germany.
The P229 has the year of manufacture encoded in the first two characters of the serial number, but it appears to follow a different code. All P229 serial numbers in the references I've found begin with 'A'. Year of manufacture seems to be:
AB=92, AC=93, AD=94, AE-95, AF=96, AG=97, AH=98, AI=99, AK=2000
These codes are anecdotal: They're based on owner reports compiled on the sigforum.com user forum. As with any such list there are some inaccurate entries. A good guess in that your P229, serial number AE24826, was assembled in Exeter in late 1995.
