Ek Shunya Shunya Marathi Serial

He was a part of the investigative serial Ek Shunya Shunya where Deepak, Shivaji Satam and BP Singh – the creator of C.I.D., first began their journey on television. Earlier in November, when there were rumours abound about Satam quitting the show, the senior actor had brushed them aside. Feb 27, 2018 - A Film and Television Institute of India graduate, Singh had produced the popular Marathi show based on crime diaries, Ek Shunya Shunya.

Brief Intro

Shivaji Satam is an Indian television and film actor, who has appeared in many Hindi as well as Marathi films. He is popularly known for his role as ACP Pradyuman in Sony TV’s ‘C.I.D’.

Early Life & Background/ Early Career

Shivaji was born on 21st April 1950 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He completed his graduation Chemistry and then completed a Diploma in Business Administration. Later, he worked in the Dena Bank as a cashier. While working in bank, he used to participate in various plays and inter-bank stage competition.

First assignment/ First major break

Shivaji’s made his first commercial break through a play ‘Sangeet Vardaan’, however, he got recognition through Marathi movie ‘Uttarayan’.

Journey in the Industry

During his college days, Shivaji got a chance to perform on a stage show as one of the performer felt sick. Thus, he was asked to carry forward the role, but while performing he omitted some of the dialogues. Later, Vasantrao Deshpande (a classical vocalist) offered him a role in his musical play (Sangit Natak) but once again he omitted almost a page full of dialogues. It was almost an end to his acting career, however, Vasantrao gave him one more chance and this time Shivaji proved himself. He has worked in 14 Marathi commercial played under the direction of Vijaya Mehta, Aatmaram Bhende, Chandrakant Kulkarni and others. He has won Best Actor Award for the play ‘Dhyaani Mani’ in Maharashtra State Film Awards.

Later, Shivaji got offers from television and he debuted on screen with the serial ‘Rishte Naate’. In 1988, he appeared in the television series named ‘Famous Trials of India’. He has also worked in a Marathi serial ‘Ek Shoonya Shoonya’.

Till this time Shivaji was quite popular but he got immensely popular worldwide for playing the role of ACP Pradyuman for Sony TV’s ‘CID’. In 1998, Sony TV launched the serial ‘CID’ and roped in Shivaji for the lead role. Since then he is appearing on the show and it is a longest running Indian television show, which has completed sixteen years. The show has received many awards. It was named in Guinness World Record and Limca Book of Records for canning an entire episode in a single shot of 111 minutes without a single cut in November 2004. In 2013, he planned to quit the show but returned due to the public demand.

Shivaji debuted in films through a Marathi film ‘Kaiwari’, directed by Kamlakar Torne. Meanwhile, he also acted in various Hindi movies. In 1987, he played the role of Doctor in the movie ‘Pestonjee’. In 1997, he played the supporting role of Dayanand Dixit in the movie ‘Ghulam-E-Mustafa’, starring Nana Patekar in a lead role. In 1999, he once worked with Nana Patekar in the movie ‘Hu Tu Tu’. In the movie ‘Vaastav’, he played the role of Sanjay Dutt’s father. He also acted in the movie ‘Pukar’, starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit.

Shivaji later started playing the fatherly roles. In 2000, he played the role of Govinda’s non-biological father in the movie ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai’. He once again worked with Sanjay Dutt in the movie ‘Hathyar’, where he played the role of Sanjay’s grandfather. He also played the role of Rani Mukherjee’s father in the movie ‘Nayak’. Apart from this, he played the role of commissioner in the movies like ‘Bardaasht’ and Salman’s Khan ‘Garv: Pride and Honour’. He also played the role of Arjun Bajaj in the comedy film drama ‘Taxi No 9211’, starring Nana Patekar and John Abraham. He has worked with the renowned directors like Gulzar, Rajkumar Santoshi, Subhash Ghai, Mahesh Manjrekar, Milan Luthria, Partho Ghosh and many more.

Shivaji has also worked in the popular Marathi movies. In 2000, he played the role of Aniruddha Nadkarni in the movie ‘Nidaan’. In 2002, he won Maharashtra State Film Award as a Best Actor for the movie ‘Ek Hoti Vadi’. He also played the lead role of Raghu in movie ‘Uttarayan’, opposite Neena Kulkarni in 2005. He played the role of drunkard grandfather in the super-hit comedy movie ‘De Dhakka’. He had also worked in the movie ‘Haapus’ in a role of Anna Gurav. He has also worked in two English movies named ‘English August’ and ‘Split Wide Open’. Both the movies were directed by Dev Benegal.

Personal life

Shivaji’s got married to his family friend’s daughter Aruna. Aruna use to work in Bank of Maharashtra and was state Kabbadi Player & the Captain of the team. She also won the Chatrapati Award. Sadly she passed away due to Breast Cancer. The couple has a son named Abhijeet, who is also an actor. Abhijeet is married to a well known Marathi actress Madhura Velankar.

Shivaji works for ‘Crayon’ which is an organization that works for children who are orphans. Satam sponsored 5 girls’ education and even met them personally.
